At what price, survival? Then our retrospective also serves as a tribute to Vonda N. Flyboys by Stanley Schmidt. Junior gazed out over the starlit sea crashing far below, his wings quivering slightly with anticipation.

One of the latter, Coppersmith, lay with her streamlined body and tail stretched out on the balcony railing near Junior, sometimes gently stroking his wings with her nose and foremost hands. Also his sister Goldie and several of the teachers who had guided his growth from his birth to this, his crowning moment at Surfcrag.

One by one they made their way to touch him and speak soft words of farewell and encouragement, some in Hetalk, some in Shetalk. Then they all drew back and fell silent. Junior pivoted on the rail, his back momentarily to the sea and the world beyond, to sweep his eyes over them one last time.

Wordlessly he turned back to the sea, and Bob spoke his one important line in the ceremony. Make me proud. Then Junior leaned forward and released his grip on the rail. For a moment he fell toward the sea, but almost instantly swooped upward and flew strongly out over the waves. Bob followed, a respectful few seconds later, as the cheers of the assembled well-wishers faded behind them. It feels so strangeJunior thought. For years he had anticipated this moment, imagining it as one of pure, unalloyed triumph and glory.

In reality there was nothing pure or unalloyed about it.Last updated: July 2, B ack in the late s, one of the most exciting things you could own was a digital watch. Instead of trying to figure out the time from slowly rotating hands, as you had to do with an old-style analog watch, you simply read the numbers off a digital display.

Since then, we've got more used to the idea of digital technology. Now pretty much everything seems to be digital, from television and radio to music players, cameras, cellphones, and even books. What's the difference between analog and digital technology? Which is best? Let's take a closer look! Photo by Jhi L. Scott courtesy of US Navy. People accept digital things easily enough, often by thinking of them as electroniccomputerized, and perhaps not even worth trying to understand.

But the concept of analog technology often seems more baffling—especially when people try to explain it in pages like this. So what's it all about? If you have an analog watch, it tells the time with hands that sweep around a dial: the position of the hands is a measurement of the time.

How much the hands move is directly related to what time it is. So if the hour hand sweeps across two segments of the dial, it's showing that twice as much time has elapsed compared to if it had moved only one segment.

That sounds incredibly obvious, but it's much more subtle than it first seems. The point is that the hand's movements over the dial are a way of representing passing time. It's not the same thing as time itself: it's a representation or an analogy of time.

The same is true when you measure something with a ruler. If you measure the length of your finger and mark it on the surface of a wooden ruler, that little strip of wood or plastic you're looking at a small segment of the ruler is the same length as your finger.

It isn't your finger, of course—it's a representation of your finger: another analogy. That's really what the term analog means. Photo: This dial thermometer shows temperature with a pointer and dial. If you prefer a more subtle definition, it uses its pointer to show a representation or analogy of the temperature on the dial.

Until computers started to dominate science and technology in the early decades of the 20th century, virtually every measuring instrument was analog. If you wanted to measure an electric currentyou did it with a moving-coil meter that had a little pointer moving over a dial. The more the pointer moved up the dial, the higher the current in your circuit.

The pointer was an analogy of the current. All kinds of other measuring devices worked in a similar way, from weighing machines and speedometers to sound-level meters and seismographs earthquake -plotting machines. However, analog technology isn't just about measuring things or using dials and pointers.

When we say something is analog, we often simply mean that it's not digital: the job it does, or the information it handles, doesn't involve processing numbers electronically.Analog and Digital. Thanks for telling us about the problem. Return to Book Page. This software tool is used in the context of a presentation of systems concepts and analysis techniques. Use of MATLAB helps students to understand what the mathematical abstractions represent, which helps them to understand the behavior of a variety of systems. In response to a wide range of signal inputs. The software provides students with instantaneous feedback which encourages them to explore problems further. Topics covered in the text include signals, systems, convolution, Fourier series and transforms, Laplace transforms, analog filters, sampling, the discrete-time Fourier transform DTFTFFT, z-transforms and digital filters.

All basic concepts are illustrated by worked examples. End-of-chapter problems include simple drills as well as more challenging exercises that develop or ambardr the concepts covered.

A unique but optional feature of this text is the software supplied on disk which contains ready-to-run demonstrations, interactive programs and full-fledged general purpose programs. The software runs under MATLAB and includes routines developed for plotting functions, generating random signals, regular and periodic convolution, analytical and numerical solution of differential and difference equations, Fourier analysis, frequency response, asymptotic Bode plots, closed form expressions for Laplace and z-transforms and inverse transforms, classical analog filter design, sampling, quantization, interpolation, FIR and IIR filter design using various methods, and more.

So as not to affect the continuity and logical flow of the text material, the programs are described and used only in the accompanying documentation on disk. A MATLAB appendix to each chapter lists the appropriate programs, and each section that ambardaf be tied to the software is marked.

The second edition of Introduction to Digital and Analog Communications, 2e is written at an accessible level and serves as an introductory treatment of communication theory, both ana-log and digital communications. Given the highly mathematical nature of communication theory, it is rather easy for the reader to lose sight of the practical side of communication systems. Throughout the book, the authors have made a special effort to move through the mathe-matical treatment at an easy-to-grasp level, and also to point out the practical relevance of the theory wherever it is appropri-ate to do so.

Also, Introduction to Digital and Analog Communications, 2e offers the probability coverage later in the book chapter 8 since probability theory is not critical to the understanding of modulation. This also contributes to the accessible approach of the text. Introduction to Digital and Analog Communications, 2e is self-contained and suited for a one or two-semester course in communica-tion systems taken by Electrical Engineering juniors or seniors.

The book offers flexibility for organizing the course material to suit the interests of course professors and students. Eye Diagrams for Binary and Hykins Systems 6.
